Man Dead, West Haven Police Officer Wounded in Officer-Involved Shooting: Jovan Washington Struggles with Police, Resulting in Fatal Outcome

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The Connecticut Office of the Inspector General has released its initial findings and body camera footage of an officer-involved shooting in West Haven that occurred on Friday.

According to the report, police were called to 296 Terrace Avenue at around 1:55 a.m. in response to a domestic complaint. Upon arrival, officers spoke with a woman who claimed that 33-year-old Jovan Washington had attempted to strangle her and prevent her from leaving the apartment.

Once inside the bedroom, officers informed Washington, who was later identified as Officer Cody Bacon, that he was under arrest and asked him to put on a pair of pants. However, as Washington stood up and went to his closet, he suddenly turned around and reached under the mattress for a gun. A struggle ensued, during which Washington fired a single shot, hitting Officer Bacon in the leg.

The report states that Officer Triscritti then fired multiple shots, striking Washington. Both individuals were subsequently transported to local hospitals, where Washington was pronounced dead and Officer Bacon is now in stable condition.

The Office of Inspector General, along with the Milford State Attorney’s Office and the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad, are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
