Labourer Pramod Madan Gautam Succumbs to Burns, Death Toll in Surat Fire Accident Rises to Eight

Another worker injured in the fire accident at Aether Industries in Surat has tragically passed away, bringing the death toll to eight. Five other workers remain in critical condition and are receiving treatment at various private hospitals.

The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Pramod Madan Gautam, a resident of Sachin GIDC and originally from Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh. He suffered severe burns, with over 95 percent of his body affected, and had been undergoing treatment at Maitreya Hospital in Surat since November 29.

Sachin GIDC police inspector J R Chaudhary stated, “One more person has died in connection with the fire tragedy incident in Aether Industries. We are awaiting reports from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), factory inspector, and fire officials. Once we receive these reports, we will decide our future course of action.”

The five workers who are still in critical condition have been identified as Chitranjan Yadav (19), Balram Bega (30), Manoj Mukhiya (34), Narendra Pathak (36), and Munnalal Yadav (22). All of them are residents of Sachin GIDC.

The fire broke out after an explosion in a highly inflammable solvent tank at Aether Industries in Sachin GIDC on the morning of November 29. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control after continuous use of foam.

Sources revealed that there were more than 160 workers present at the factory when the fire erupted. In total, 27 workers suffered minor to major burn injuries and were transported to four different hospitals in the city. Two days later, the bodies of seven missing workers were discovered on the company premises.

The Sachin GIDC police have registered a case of accidental death and have initiated an investigation into the incident.

In response to the accident, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the National Green Tribunal have taken suo motu cognizance and are monitoring the situation closely.
