The mounting death toll has raised concerns about Israel’s commitment to safeguarding civilians. The United States, Israel’s closest ally, has stated that it is too early to determine if Israel is doing enough to protect civilians. However, it expects Israel to refrain from striking areas that have been designated as safe zones.

Residents and journalists on the ground have reported that Israeli airstrikes have targeted areas where people were instructed to seek shelter. This has alarmed the international community, with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urging Israel to avoid actions that would worsen the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and spare civilians from further suffering.

Palestinians in the city of Khan Younis have been fleeing as airstrikes pound the area, despite the Israeli military’s warning to evacuate. These individuals have expressed that there is nowhere safe for them to seek refuge.

Israel has made significant advances into the southern half of Gaza since the collapse of a week-long truce on Friday. There have been fierce clashes between Hamas fighters and Israeli soldiers, leading to the closure of the main road out of Khan Younis.

Israel launched its assault in response to a cross-border attack by Hamas gunmen in October. In eight weeks of warfare, thousands of Palestinians, including a significant number of women and children, have been killed.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees in Gaza has expressed concern about the displacement of already vulnerable individuals, the strain on hospitals, and limited supplies for humanitarian operations.

The World Health Organization has called on Israel to protect civilians and infrastructure, including hospitals. However, the organization was instructed to remove its supplies from a medical warehouse in southern Gaza due to the ongoing ground operations.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with a significant portion of the population already displaced. Israel has ordered Palestinians to leave certain areas, directing them towards the coast and the town of Rafah. Many Gazans have packed their belongings and embarked on a solemn procession towards Rafah.

The United States has acknowledged Israel’s efforts to evacuate targeted areas rather than entire cities. However, it expects Israel to refrain from attacking regions identified as “no-strike” zones.

As the conflict continues, the focus remains on protecting civilians and finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
