“Family of Black Shooting Victims File Lawsuit Seeking Damages for Wrongful Death and Negligence”

Lawsuit Filed Against Dollar General and Others in Florida Shooting

Attorneys representing the families of three Black victims killed in a shooting at a Dollar General store in Florida have filed a lawsuit seeking damages for wrongful death and negligence. The lawsuit targets the store, the owners of the property, a security company, and the shooter’s estate.

The shooting took place on August 26, claiming the lives of Jerrald Gallion, 29, Anolt “A.J.” Laguerre Jr., 19, and Angela Carr, 52. The shooter, Ryan Palmeter, died by suicide after the attack in Jacksonville’s predominantly Black New Town neighborhood.

Attorneys Michael Haggard and Ben Crump filed the lawsuit at the Duval County Circuit Court, accusing the businesses of negligence and arguing they have a responsibility under Florida’s wrongful death law. Family members of the victims spoke at a news conference about using the lawsuit as a tool for justice.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages greater than $50,000 from Dollar General’s entities, DOLGENCORP LLC and DC Strategic LLC, as well as Corso General II LLC, which owned and leased the site, and Interface Security Systems LLC, the security company contracted for the store.

According to the complaint, the store was described as a “criminal’s safe haven” devoid of meaningful security measures. The attorneys argue that a security guard could have made a difference in preventing the tragedy.

The lawsuit also includes Palmeter’s parents, Stephen and Maryann Palmeter, alleging that they failed to take precautions against potential violence by their son. The attorneys describe Palmeter as a “ticking time bomb” with an obsession regarding firearms and violence.

During the news conference, family members expressed their grief and frustration. Quantavious Laguerre, the brother of one of the victims, said, “I’m so tired of [hearing] ‘A.J., he’s in a better place.’ No, I want him here.”

The lawsuit aims to hold all parties accountable for their alleged roles in the tragedy and to shed light on the factors that contributed to Palmeter’s violent actions. Haggard emphasized the need to understand the radicalization of young white men and to uncover what was happening at Palmeter’s home.

Dollar General, Interface Security Systems, and Corso General II have not responded to requests for comment.

As the legal battle begins, the families of the victims hope that their lawsuit will bring justice and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. They want to ensure that their loved ones did not die in vain and that measures are taken to prevent such tragedies from occurring again..
