Byron Carillo, Ex-Boyfriend of Vanessa De La Cruz, Dies by Suicide After Killing 1-Year-Old Boy and 3 Others in Dallas Shooting

The search for the gunman responsible for a quadruple killing in Dallas, Texas, came to a dramatic end when the suspect led police on a high-speed chase and died by apparent suicide after crashing into a ditch. The incident, which took place on Sunday afternoon in a southeast Dallas neighborhood, left four people dead, including a 1-year-old boy.

The Dallas Police Department stated that the killings appeared to be an isolated incident and assured the public that there was no ongoing threat. The suspect was identified as 21-year-old Byron Carillo, who had a prior relationship with one of the victims, 20-year-old Vanessa De La Cruz. Carillo was also the father of De La Cruz’s child, Logan De La Cruz, who tragically lost his life in the attack.

According to family members, De La Cruz had ended her relationship with Carillo due to alleged abuse. The shooting occurred at the home of De La Cruz’s parents. Carillo had previously been charged with aggravated assault in 2021 and was ordered to wear an ankle monitoring device. However, it was discovered that he had cut off the monitor before or immediately after the shooting.

Carillo was eventually spotted driving a stolen car in Austin, over 200 miles from Dallas. When highway patrol officers attempted to stop him, a chase ensued. Carillo eventually crashed into a ditch and attempted to flee on foot. As officers closed in on him, he fatally shot himself.

This tragic incident adds to the alarming statistics of gun violence in the United States. The shooting in Dallas marked the 627th mass shooting of the year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. Logan De La Cruz became the 272nd child aged 11 or younger to be killed in a shooting in 2023.

The motive behind the quadruple killing is still under investigation. However, the Dallas Police Department has reported an 11% increase in homicides this year compared to 2022. The city has recorded 226 homicides as of Sunday.

The community is left mourning the loss of four lives, including the young boy, as they grapple with the ongoing issue of gun violence.
