Assistant to Mahout Found Dead near Sethumadai: Rajkumar, Permanent Cavady of Kozhikamuthy Elephant Camp, Anamalai Tiger Reserve

A cavady, who served as an assistant to a mahout, was discovered dead near Sethumadai on Tuesday. The deceased, identified as Rajkumar, aged 35, worked as a permanent cavady at the Kozhikamuthy elephant camp within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) located near Top Slip.

According to ATR officials, Rajkumar’s lifeless body was found close to the Manakadavu Amman temple, a mere 10 metres away from the Sethumadai – Top Slip road. This particular area falls under the Sethumadai west section of the Pollachi forest range, which is part of ATR.

Authorities noticed Rajkumar’s absence from duty over the past three days, prompting them to inform the Police and Revenue Department officials about his untimely demise. As a result, the police have initiated an investigation and filed a case in relation to his death.

A senior official from ATR stated that the exact cause of Rajkumar’s death remains unknown and can only be determined once the police investigation is complete.

The elephant camp at Kozhikamuthy serves as a vital part of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, which is dedicated to conserving and protecting the region’s diverse wildlife. The reserve is renowned for its efforts in preserving the natural habitat of tigers and other endangered species.

Rajkumar’s role as a cavady involved assisting the mahout in caring for and maintaining the elephants within the camp. His sudden demise has left his colleagues and officials at ATR shocked and saddened.
