9-Year-Old Aiden James-Harrison Smith Dies After Falling Through Ice in Iowa Pond

An Iowa community is grieving the tragic loss of a young boy who died after falling through the ice and into a pond over the weekend.

On Saturday, a neighbor noticed a hole in the ice of the pond and a pair of shoes nearby, prompting them to call the police. First responders from the Waukee Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene near the 1100 block of Northview Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of the young boy, later identified as 9-year-old Aiden James-Harrison Smith.

Local reports indicate that Aiden had recently moved to the area with his family. According to his grandfather, Shawn Smith Pickett, the family had only been living in the area for two weeks and were unaware of the pond’s existence. Pickett revealed that Aiden had never mentioned the pond to his family, and it was hidden from view unless one went up and over a hill.

Family members described Aiden as a talented athlete who participated in Waukee’s youth football and baseball programs. He was also a Cub Scout.

Waukee Fire Chief Clint Robinson emphasized the dangers of venturing onto the ice, particularly during this season when temperatures have been relatively warm. He advised people to stay off the ice, especially in the metropolitan area.
