Deputies in Marion County are trying to figure out who was responsible for a deadly shooting. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says they found 19-year-old Griffin Chase Smith in a truck behind the Marion Oaks Community Center around 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.Originally, deputies thought they were responding to a vehicle accident, that is, until they found Smith with a gunshot wound. Now, they’re asking for the public’s help in piecing together what happened. “They saw a vehicle in the wood line. They thought it was a vehicle accident, a vehicle versus a tree. When they went up to the vehicle, they realized there was a man inside and tried to get him to unlock the door. But he was not responding at that time,” Zachary Moore of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies believe Smith was shot at a Dollar General along Marion Oaks Boulevard. He somehow managed to get in his truck and drive about a mile away to the community center where deputies found him. “Detectives are really looking for anyone who was in the area of that Dollar General where the shooting happened,” Moore said.The sheriff’s office says Smith was still alive when deputies arrived on scene and rescued him from the truck, but he later died at the hospital. “He was a young, young man, so it’s very heartbreaking to see,” Moore said.
