Two people have died and one is critically injured after a newly constructed wall collapsed in Chennai amid heavy rain and strong winds. The incident occurred in the Kanathur area of East Coastal Road on Monday morning. The victims have been identified as Shek Afraj and MD Tofik from Jharkhand. The police are currently investigating the incident.
The rainfall in Chennai has been accompanied by gusty winds, causing widespread damage and disruption. The Chennai Airport has announced the closure of its airfield for arrival operations from 0917 hrs to 1130 hrs IST.

The severe weather conditions are being attributed to the approaching cyclone Michaung. According to Balachandran, the Chennai Regional Metrology Director, the cyclone is currently located about 100 km east-northeast of Chennai and has been moving at a speed of 10 km/hr in the last six hours. It is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by 4 p.m. today and move in a northwest direction. Heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to continue in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Thiruvallur districts until this evening.
As cyclone Michaung is expected to make landfall in southern Andhra Pradesh and the north coast of Tamil Nadu tonight, Chennai and other parts of the city are experiencing heavy rainfall and strong winds. The downpour has led to massive waterlogging in various areas.
The Meteorological Centre in Chennai has issued a warning of moderate thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate to intense rainfall in several districts of Tamil Nadu. Suburban train services in Chennai have been temporarily suspended due to heavy rains and waterlogging. Waterlogging and uprooted trees have been reported in several parts of the city, including Maduravoyal, Porur, Saligaramam, and Valasaravakkam.
Due to the dangerous water levels at Bridge No. 14 between Vyasarpadi and Basin Bridge, eleven express trains from Chennai Central have been cancelled today.

Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors and take necessary precautions as the severe weather conditions persist.
