The wreckage of a US Air Force Osprey that crashed off the coast of Japan last week has been discovered. The remains of several crew members were found on board the aircraft. According to Japanese broadcaster NHK, five bodies have been recovered so far. The Osprey, a CV-22, was on a training mission when it went down near Yakushima island. The recovery operations have involved the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson and divers. The Air Force Special Operations Command stated that the identities of the deceased crew members have yet to be confirmed. Their main priority is to bring the airmen home and support their families during this difficult time.
The cause of the crash remains unknown, but witnesses reported seeing fire coming from the Osprey’s left engine before it went down. The Osprey is a hybrid aircraft, capable of taking off and landing like a helicopter while also having the ability to rotate its propellers forward for faster flight, similar to an airplane. However, there have been concerns about the safety of Ospreys, as they have been involved in a number of crashes in the past. This latest incident has rekindled those safety concerns, especially in Japan where Ospreys are used at both US and Japanese military bases.
