Mystery Surrounds Shooting of Sphamandla Zwane and Two Survivors in Pietermaritzburg

A shooting incident in Pietermaritzburg has left one man dead and two others injured. The incident occurred on Church Street in the early hours of Saturday morning. According to uMgungundlovu District spokesperson, Sergeant Sifiso Gwala, the shooting took place at around 4.30 am.

The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Sphamandla Zwane from Jika Joe. The two survivors have been named as Mbuso Khumalo and Sphamandla Maqelane, both aged 30. Khumalo sustained gunshot wounds to his chest, thighs, and elbow, while Maqelane was found at Northdale Hospital with a gunshot wound to his right ankle.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and the victims claim to have no knowledge or suspicion of why they were targeted. The police are currently investigating the case as a murder and two attempted murder cases. The suspect is still at large.

CCTV footage obtained by The Witness shows three men walking in the street, followed by the shooter. The suspect pulls out a gun and begins firing several shots at the victims. Despite attempting to flee, the victims are struck by the gunfire. The shooter then proceeds to shoot one of the men at close range while he is lying on the ground.

As the suspect turns away, he walks past the first man he shot, who is still struggling to get up, and shoots him again. The shooter then walks in the opposite direction, concealing his firearm at the back of his trousers. The entire incident lasts less than 30 seconds.

The shooting occurred in front of other witnesses, including a parked car and another person walking nearby. The police are urging anyone with information about the incident or the suspect to come forward.
