Man Identified as Dionte Claytor Killed in Southeast D.C. Shooting

A 26-year-old man named Dionte Claytor was shot and killed in Southeast D.C. on Sunday night, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. in the 3000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.

Local officers in the area reported hearing gunshots and witnessed a vehicle fleeing the scene. When they arrived at the scene, they discovered Claytor with gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The police have not yet released any information about the suspect or a possible motive for the shooting. Authorities are currently investigating the incident.

This tragic incident adds to the increasing number of homicides in the district. So far this year, there have been 252 reported homicides in D.C., marking a 32% increase compared to the same period last year. In 2023, a total of 203 homicides were reported throughout the entire year. MPD crime statistics show a 40% rise in violent crime.

The Metropolitan Police Department is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. They can contact the police at (202) 727-9099 or text the department’s tip line at 50411. To encourage cooperation, the department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the homicide.
