THE BRONX – The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) has confirmed that a fire at a high-rise New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) apartment building in the Soundview section of the Bronx, which resulted in the death of one person and left nine others injured, was caused by a lithium-ion battery.

On Sunday evening, 20 units comprising 78 firefighters responded to the incident at 1440 Bronx River Ave. The fire broke out on the 10th floor of the 14-story building. Firefighters discovered a 39-year-old man, who was unresponsive, and transported him to a hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The FDNY reported that nine other individuals suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene. The cause of the fire was determined to be a lithium-ion battery, which was found at the entrance of the 10th floor apartment.

This incident raises concerns about the safety of lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in electronic devices and vehicles. The volatile nature of these batteries can lead to fires and explosions if not handled properly. It is crucial for individuals to follow manufacturer guidelines and exercise caution when using and charging devices powered by lithium-ion batteries.

This is not the first incident where a lithium-ion battery has been identified as the cause of a fire. In a recent Brooklyn fire, three family members tragically lost their lives when a lithium-ion battery from an e-bike ignited their home. The FDNY confirmed that the battery was responsible for the deadly blaze.

In light of these incidents, it is essential for manufacturers to prioritize the safety of their battery products and for individuals to be aware of the potential risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. Proper storage, charging, and usage practices can significantly reduce the likelihood of fires and protect lives.
