McCool was reportedly on a motorcycle trip off base when he was attacked. His father, identified as Joseph, told Sky News that McCool had decided to go out on his scrambler motorbike for one last ride up a local mountain, as he was preparing for the end of his tour of duty just three days away. Two men jumped out at him with a gun, and McCool, mistakenly thinking the gun was fake, was shot.

The Ministry of Defence described McCool as a “big family man” who was fun to work with. He had a remarkable operational record and excelled in many of the military’s toughest courses. His fitness and endurance were legendary, and he was known for his infectious enthusiasm. McCool was commissioned from Sandhurst in August 2014 and had been deployed in Europe, the Middle East, the Falklands, and Africa.

The British Army Training Unit in Kenya (BATUK), where McCool was stationed, is based in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, with a small base in Nairobi. BATUK consists of around 100 permanent staff and an additional 280 personnel on short tours. Under an agreement with the Kenyan government, up to six infantry battalions per year carry out eight-week exercises in the country. The army also provides training to Kenyan troops to combat terrorism in the region.

The death of Major Kevin McCool is a tragic loss for the British military. His dedication, professionalism, and sense of purpose will be remembered by all those who had the privilege to serve with him.
