The victim of a shooting early on Saturday morning has been identified as 30-year-old Jervon King. He was found dead at the scene, which was at 29 Minerva Ave. at 4:11 a.m. According to a news release from the Mansfield Police Department, King had been shot once and was found inside a bedroom.
The suspected shooter, who is listed on a police report as living at the Minerva Avenue address, was arrested on an unrelated felony warrant. He made a call to the police after the shooting, which was obtained by The News Journal. In the call, the man stated, “Somebody’s dying on Minerva. He got shot. He kept pulling a knife on me.” He later elaborated, saying, “He pulled a knife on me. Somebody’s life was in danger. I ain’t going to lie. I had no choice. I had to shoot him.”

The dispatcher asked the caller if the gun was put away, to which he replied that it was. The caller also revealed that the victim was his “little cousin.” When asked about the location of the gunshot wound, the caller admitted he did not know. The dispatcher advised him to stand with his arms up when the officers arrived to show that he was no longer armed.
Mansfield police Captain Randy Carver stated that a decision on possible charges has not been made yet. They are currently working with prosecutors to determine the appropriate course of action.
