On Sunday (Nov. 26), authorities were alerted to a foul odor emanating from a section of the building. Following the smell, officials uncovered the remains of 36-year-old Jason Anthony Thompson in the HVAC system.

Thompson was last seen on October 25 when he informed his family that he was evading the police and was on the college’s center campus. He had been sending text messages to his family, implying that he was hiding in the ventilation system, possibly in the performing arts center. However, communication abruptly ceased.

Thompson was reported missing to Sterling Heights police on November 1. In an effort to locate him, Macomb Community College police inspected the roof of the performing arts center on November 7. They found no signs of attempted access to the ventilation system, though Chief William Leavens clarified that the area was not intended for human entry.

The discovery of Thompson’s body came on November 26 when college police detected a putrid odor at the Macomb Center. Upon closer examination, they found his remains in the vent. Chief Leavens noted that the meshing covering the vent was bent, making it difficult to detect signs of entry.

Thompson likely perished shortly after becoming stuck in the ventilation system. However, his family questions whether his fate could have been determined sooner if the college police had thoroughly inspected the vent on November 7.

Chief Leavens defended the investigation, stating that the area was so small that it seemed impossible for a person to gain entry. He expressed regrets that the tragedy had occurred and acknowledged the family’s need for answers.

The incident has raised concerns about the security measures in place at Macomb Community College and has prompted a review of the campus’s ventilation systems. Authorities are working to ensure such a tragedy does not happen again.
