Suspected Drug Peddler Killed and Five Injured in Gun Battle in Assam

A suspected drug peddler was killed and five people, including a policewoman, were injured during a fierce gun battle between moving vehicles in Assam’s Kamrup district. The incident occurred near Agiathuri, close to Amingaon, after the police received information about a vehicle carrying narcotics.

The Kamrup Additional Superintendent of Police, Kalyan Kumar Pathak, stated that three drug peddlers were travelling in a luxury car when they were intercepted by the police. Instead of stopping, they opened fire on the officers and attempted to flee. In response, the police retaliated and chased the suspects. During the exchange of fire, one drug peddler was killed instantly, and two others sustained injuries.

Constable Hima Das, a policewoman, was also shot during the encounter. Additionally, two local individuals, Nur Islam and Rebati Bharali, were injured in the crossfire between the two parties. All the injured were taken to a nearby private hospital and later transferred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.

The deceased drug peddler, identified as Salem from Guwahati, was found to be carrying a bag filled with suspected drugs. The police team recovered the bag from the vehicle. Pathak mentioned that during the operation, the suspects’ car collided with several other vehicles in the area, resulting in a temporary traffic congestion. However, the situation is now under control.

The incident highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Assam. The police’s successful operation in intercepting the suspects and recovering the suspected drugs demonstrates their commitment to curbing illegal drug activities in the region. The injured individuals, including the valiant policewoman, are receiving medical attention, and efforts will continue to bring the drug peddlers to justice.
