Pittsfield Native Air Force Member Jacob Galliher Killed in Osprey Crash near Japan

PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The community of Pittsfield is mourning the loss of one of its own after a U.S. Air Force Osprey crashed near Japan during a training mission. The victim has been identified as Jacob “Jake” Galliher, a native of Pittsfield.

Galliher was one of eight crew members on board the Osprey V-22 when it crashed into the ocean. His body was found and identified by officials, making him the only crew member that has been recovered so far.

In a statement released by Galliher’s family, they expressed their gratitude for the support and condolences they have received. They described Jake as an amazing father, son, and brother who was dedicated to his family and friends.

U.S. Representative Richard Neal also expressed his condolences, stating that Galliher represented the best of the nation by enlisting in the Air Force right after high school. He extended his thoughts and prayers to Galliher’s family, especially his parents, wife, and two young sons.

Governor Maura Healey also expressed her sadness over Galliher’s passing and offered her condolences to his family and the Berkshire County community. She emphasized the bravery and selflessness of servicemembers and extended her thoughts to Galliher’s colleagues in the Air Force.

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren sent her deepest condolences to Galliher’s family and pressed for answers regarding the troubled history of the aircraft involved in the crash.

Senator Edward J. Markey honored Galliher’s service and expressed his sorrow over the tragic loss. He offered his thoughts and prayers to Galliher’s wife, sons, parents, stepfather, and entire family.

Galliher was a recent graduate of Taconic High School in Pittsfield. He leaves behind his wife, Ivy, and two young sons. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and efforts are ongoing to locate the other missing crew members.

The Pittsfield community, as well as the nation, mourns the loss of Jacob Galliher, a dedicated Air Force member who tragically lost his life while serving his country.
