Man’s Body Recovered and 11 Still Missing After Flash Floods in Indonesia
Rescuers in Medan, Indonesia have discovered the body of a man who was buried under tons of mud and rocks following flash floods and a landslide that struck a hilly village on Sumatra island. Authorities have stated that 11 people are still missing.

The disaster occurred when heavy rainfall triggered a torrent of mud, rocks, and trees from a mountain late on Friday. The deluge reached a river, causing it to overflow and sweep through villages located on the mountainside near Lake Toba in North Sumatra province.
Rescue workers have been working tirelessly, using excavators, dogs, and even their bare hands to clear the debris in the worst-hit village as they search for survivors and victims, according to Sariman Sitorus, a spokesperson for the local Search and Rescue Agency. In addition, divers equipped with sonar detection have been deployed to search for possible victims who may have been swept into Lake Toba.
Late on Saturday, rescuers found a mud-covered body on the lakeside, approximately 500 meters from the severely damaged Senior Bakara Hotel. The deceased individual has been identified as an employee of the hotel.
The National Disaster Management Agency has reported that the landslide and flash floods have caused damage to at least 35 houses, a church, a school, and a hotel in the village of Simangulampe. As a result, approximately 55 families have been forced to seek refuge in a temporary government shelter.

Indonesia experiences frequent flooding and landslides during the rainy season, which typically occurs from October to March. The country’s topography, with many mountainous areas and fertile flood plains, makes it particularly susceptible to such natural disasters.
Lake Toba, covering an area of 1,145 square kilometers, is a popular tourist destination on Sumatra island. The Indonesian government has identified it as one of the ten stunning natural attractions in the country that they aim to develop further to attract international tourists.
