Ziv Stahl, executive director of the human rights organization Yesh Din, experienced the horror firsthand when her sister-in-law and several peace activists were killed in an attack by Hamas militants on October 7. Stahl, however, is not calling for revenge but instead seeks a more nuanced approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Stahl acknowledges Israel’s right to defend itself but believes it should not come at the cost of thousands of Palestinian lives. In response, a young anti-war group called “Gen Zayin” has formed, advocating for a two-state solution and an end to the occupation of Palestinian territories. Speaking out in favor of Palestinians can also have severe consequences, with some Jewish Israelis losing their jobs or facing public sanctions. Ofer Cassif, a left-wing lawmaker, was suspended for 45 days after criticizing the Israeli government’s handling of the conflict. Journalist Israel Frey was doxed and forced to flee his home after expressing sympathy for both Israeli and Palestinian victims of the violence.
Amidst the turmoil, grieving families who have lost loved ones are also considering the future. Maoz Inon became a peace activist after his parents were killed in the October 7 attack, believing that peace is the only path to security for all in the region. Elana Kaminka, whose son was killed defending a border base, believes that greater understanding of the realities of the occupation could change opinions on both sides.
