Prosecutors are preparing to bring murder charges against a 21-year-old man from Newbury Park who is accused of violently attacking his 63-year-old mother with a hammer. The incident occurred on Friday, and tragically, the victim, Alison Marshall, succumbed to her injuries later that day at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks.

Scott Goldberg, the son of the deceased, had initially been charged with attempted murder following the assault on November 19th. The attack also targeted his 64-year-old father, who managed to survive the assault. Goldberg was charged with assault with a deadly weapon for this offense.

Erin Meister, a supervising senior deputy District Attorney, confirmed that the case would now be elevated to a more serious charge of murder, starting on Monday. The District Attorney’s Office is currently making arrangements for the transition.

Previously, Goldberg had been held in custody at the county jail with bail set at around $500,000. However, Superior Court Judge Patricia Murphy granted the prosecution’s request to deny bail entirely, ensuring Goldberg’s continued detention until trial.

Goldberg has not yet entered a plea to the original charges, and it is unclear whether the upgraded charge will affect the court dates. As of Sunday, he remains in custody at the main jail in Ventura.

This tragic incident has left the community in shock, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. Updates on this case may be released as more information becomes available.
