Three members of a family, including a disabled woman, were found dead by suicide in Melaghar, Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Friday. The deceased have been identified as Chintaharan Pal, 75, his wife Pratibha Pal, 60, and their daughter Monica Pal, 35. Local residents discovered their bodies on a bed in their house.

Upon receiving the information, the police quickly arrived at the scene and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination. Sepahijala Superintendent of Police (SP) B J Reddy also visited the spot and later confirmed that the three died by suicide.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Chintaharan was a clay artisan, and the couple had tragically lost their son 17 years ago in a drowning incident. A senior officer at the police headquarters in Agartala stated, “It seems that the family was suffering from depression. Their daughter’s physical challenges may have contributed to their depression and prompted this tragic decision. The investigation is ongoing.”

Following the incident, the CPI(M)’s student body, Students Federation of India (SFI), and youth brigade Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), held protest demonstrations in Agartala. They burned posters with the BJP’s slogan ‘Har Ghar Sushashan’, accusing the party of poverty-induced suicides and child trafficking due to financial constraints under their regime in the state.

BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya dismissed these allegations, claiming that the CPI(M) was making baseless accusations to gain political relevance. He argued that there was no poverty in the state and called the allegations of deaths due to poverty “blatant lies.”

The incident has raised concerns about the mental health and well-being of individuals, particularly in families facing challenging circumstances. Authorities and community organizations may need to address these issues and provide support to those in need.
