By | December 2, 2023

Te Rangihīroa College, the University of Otago’s first purpose-built college since 1969, is set to open its doors to hundreds of new students on February 17. The college, named after the university’s first Māori graduate, Te Rangihīroa (Sir Peter Buck), offers a range of amenities and services for its residents.

With a room costing between $19,266 and $21,356 for a 38-week period, students can expect a “home away from home” experience, according to Gordon Roy, the University of Otago’s strategic architect. The college provides dedicated staff living onsite, college leaders on each floor for assistance, and laundry services. The facility also features a large dining room where in-house chefs prepare three meals a day.

Te Rangihīroa College is a 5-star Green Star building with spacious communal areas including a media room, games room, music room, and tutorial areas. Each floor has two smaller whānau rooms, and the building is wheelchair accessible with ensuite rooms available. Additionally, a floor or section of a floor is designated as alcohol-free each year.

The aim of the college is to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for students, focusing on pastoral care and academic success. The university believes that offering a high-quality residential college experience will help retain students and contribute to their overall college experience.

Despite the financial challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, the University of Otago is committed to prioritizing student welfare and academic achievement. The college is not expected to turn a profit in the near future but is seen as an investment in student retention and success.

Looking ahead, the university may consider building another residential college in the future. However, for now, the focus is on preparing for the first intake of students and ensuring they have a smooth transition into college life.
