The incident took place on 24th November, when a female rhino, aged between 20 and 30 years, was attacked with a spear in the national park, resulting in its demise. Two days later, Naren Saikia was apprehended for assaulting the rhino.

Post mortem examination conducted by the forest department indicated that the rhino’s death was caused by an injury on its left flank, back, and rear stomach area, resulting from a deep penetration of a spear across the skin and ribs. Further samples have been collected for DNA analysis.

Saikia has been charged under Sections 2 and 9 of the Wildlife Protection Act. While he admits to using a spear in the attack, the motive behind his actions remains unclear.

Meanwhile, authorities are investigating whether the attack was driven by trade or consumption. Unfortunately, there are individuals who hunt rhinos and elephants for their meat as well.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of wildlife poaching and the need for stricter enforcement of laws to protect these endangered species. Kaziranga National Park, known for its rich biodiversity, is home to a significant population of rhinos. Such incidents not only harm the ecosystem but also jeopardize the survival of these majestic creatures.
