The victim of a tragic crash in Kamloops has been identified as Owyn McInnis, a Thompson Rivers University (TRU) athlete. McInnis, a fourth-year outside hitter from Guelph, Ontario, was a member of the TRU men’s volleyball team. The accident occurred on November 29 and involved multiple vehicles, resulting in the death of McInnis and critical injuries to two of his teammates, who are currently receiving treatment at Royal Inland Hospital.
The devastating news of McInnis’s death was confirmed by his mother, Erin Walter, in a now-private Instagram post. Walter also mentioned that there is an ongoing criminal investigation related to the crash. The family had traveled to Kamloops over the weekend of November 24-26 to watch McInnis play.
In honor of McInnis’s memory, the TRU men’s volleyball team announced the creation of the Owyn McInnis Memorial Men’s Volleyball Athletic Award. Generous donations from two individuals have already contributed $20,000 towards the award.
The crash, which occurred around 3 p.m. on November 29, involved six vehicles and resulted in injuries to a total of 11 people. Seven of the injured individuals were transported to the hospital for further medical attention.
