Owyn McInnis Dies in Kamloops Crash, Two Teammates Critically Injured

A tragic car crash in Kamloops has claimed the life of Owyn McInnis, a Thompson Rivers University (TRU) athlete. The incident occurred on Wednesday, November 29, and involved multiple vehicles. McInnis, a fourth-year outside hitter from Guelph, Ontario, was a member of the TRU men’s volleyball team. Two of his teammates who were also in the car sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Royal Inland Hospital.

The devastating news of McInnis’s death was confirmed by his mother, Erin Walter, in a private Instagram post on Friday. Walter also revealed that a criminal investigation is underway regarding the crash. McInnis’s family had been in Kamloops over the weekend of November 24-26 to support their son’s volleyball games.

In honor of McInnis, the TRU men’s volleyball team announced the creation of the Owyn McInnis Memorial Men’s Volleyball Athletic Award. Generous donors have already contributed $20,000 towards the award. The team expressed gratitude to everyone who has reached out during this difficult time, acknowledging the overwhelming love and support they have received.

The crash, which occurred around 3 p.m. on November 29, involved six vehicles and resulted in injuries to a total of 11 people. Seven of the injured individuals were transported to the hospital for treatment. The incident has caused shock and sadness within the TRU community and beyond.

As news of the tragic accident spread, tributes and condolences poured in for McInnis and his family. The loss of a young and promising athlete has left a profound impact on those who knew him and the wider sports community.
