Lead Detective Testifies about “Frightened” Eyewitness in 2018 Homicide Case

A lead detective in a homicide investigation took the stand on November 30 to testify about a “frightened” eyewitness in a 2018 homicide case. The trial involves Marquette Jordan, 32, who is charged with first-degree murder while armed, assault, and carrying a dangerous weapon outside of a home or business with a prior felony. The charges are in connection with the fatal stabbing of Ivan Lynch, 40, on April 30, 2018, at the 900 block of 5th Street, SE.

Jordan faced his first trial in April 2022, during which the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the first-degree murder charge. However, he was convicted on lesser counts. The retrial began on November 14.

During the trial, body-worn camera footage showed Jordan telling officers that he had cancer. However, a medical doctor who examined Jordan on May 1, 2018, found no signs or symptoms of the disease. The doctor stated that Jordan did not mention any medical issues.

The prosecution also presented a detective from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) as a witness. The detective testified that he recovered a cellphone, later identified as Lynch’s, and observed blood on Jordan’s clothes. He then instructed the Department of Forensic Science (DFS) to collect the items. The detective also found a set of keys in Jordan’s pockets, which were later identified as Lynch’s car keys.

The lead detective further revealed that he interviewed Jordan’s ex-partner, who was involved in an initial altercation with Jordan that allegedly led to the stabbing. The detective described the witness as “frightened, disheveled, and terrified” during the initial interview. The witness was without shoes and appeared distressed. The detective ensured that the witness had enough time for the interview, noting that at one point, she was “balled up in the chair.”
