Police in Los Angeles have identified the suspect believed to be responsible for the murders of three homeless individuals in the city. Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore announced on Saturday that the suspect has been identified as Jerrid Joseph Powell, a 33-year-old Black male and resident of Los Angeles. Powell is also suspected in a fatal shooting during a robbery in San Dimas, located about 28 miles east of Los Angeles. Authorities confirmed that Powell was already in custody in connection with the San Dimas shooting.

The arrest of Powell came on Wednesday evening when he was apprehended by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department during a vehicle stop. The vehicle used during the San Dimas robbery was identified as the same vehicle connected to the three homicides, according to Moore.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert G. Luna stated that there is no evidence to suggest a connection between Powell and the victim of the robbery. The motive behind the killings has not yet been determined.

“I am grateful that this suspect in this case is in custody and no longer a threat to our community,” said Chief Moore.

The three killings occurred under similar circumstances, with each victim believed to be alone and asleep when they were attacked. The victims include two Hispanic men, aged 37 and 52, and a 62-year-old Black man. The killings took place in various locations in the city, including one near Skid Row, which is known for its large homeless population.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed concern for the city’s homeless community, which already faces dangerous conditions. She highlighted that four to five unhoused people die every day in Los Angeles for various reasons, including violence.
