The victim, K Chandrasekar, a graduate and power loom worker from Elampillai, was admitted to the facility at Magudanchavadi on November 26. He had turned to liquor addiction following the recent death of his father. On Thursday night, Chandrasekar’s family received a call from the centre, informing them that he was unconscious. Upon arriving at the facility, his mother, Easwari, and other relatives discovered bruises on his body. They immediately rushed him to a nearby private hospital, but unfortunately, the doctors pronounced him dead. His body was subsequently transferred to Salem GH.

Distraught and seeking justice, Easwari filed a complaint with the Magudanchavadi police station regarding the incident. According to the police, Chandrasekar had been behaving erratically and refused to sleep at the de-addiction centre on Thursday. Allegedly, Bhoopathi, the owner, tied him up to restrain him. Chandrasekar attempted to free himself, which resulted in the bruises. Tragically, due to being restrained for more than four hours, his pulse dropped, leading to his untimely demise.

Bhoopathi has been charged under Section 304 (part ii) of the Indian Penal Code and was arrested on Friday night. He has been operating the centre for the past eight months, with 24 individuals currently undergoing treatment there. Authorities are taking steps to relocate these patients to alternative facilities. In response to the tragedy, Chandrasekar’s family refused to accept his body and staged a protest until Friday night.
