21-Year-Old Integrated PhD Student Diamond Kushwaha Dies by Suicide at IISc Hostel

A tragic incident occurred at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, as a 21-year-old student died by suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of the boys’ hostel on Friday morning. The young man, Diamond Kushwaha, was a second-year Integrated PhD student in Chemical Sciences from the Solid State and Structural Chemistry unit of the institute. Hailing from Delhi, Kushwaha resided in the IISc hostel on the campus.

The incident took place at approximately 7.10 am, and despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the doctors could not save his life. The reasons behind his decision to take such a drastic step are still unknown as no suicide note was found. The police have initiated an investigation to determine the factors that could have led to this unfortunate incident.

The body of the deceased has been transferred to the MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital mortuary. Authorities are now examining all possible causes, trying to shed light on the circumstances leading to his tragic demise.

The news of the young student’s suicide has left the IISc community in shock and mourning. The institute, renowned for its academic excellence, offers a conducive environment for research and learning. Incidents like these raise concerns about the mental health support system and well-being of students on campus.

The Sadashivanagar police have registered a case of unnatural death and will conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain any contributing factors that might have pushed Kushwaha to take this extreme step. Meanwhile, the IISc administration is expected to review and strengthen their support mechanisms to ensure the mental well-being of all their students.
