Galliher’s body has been identified as the only crew member found so far among the eight on board.

Galliher, a father of two, grew up in western Massachusetts and was a graduate of Taconic H.S. The Osprey is a unique hybrid aircraft that can take off and land like a helicopter but can also rotate its propellers forward to cruise at high speeds like an airplane. However, Ospreys have had several accidents in the past, including in Japan, where they are deployed at U.S. and Japanese military bases.

Congressman Richard Neal also expressed his condolences, acknowledging the pain of losing a child and highlighting Galliher’s commitment to serving his country. Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno provided further details, stating that the Osprey disappeared from radar shortly before an emergency call was made. Eyewitness accounts suggest the aircraft was seen upside down with fire coming from one of its engines before it exploded and crashed into the sea.

The U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command confirmed that the CV-22B Osprey was from Yokota Air Base and assigned to the 353rd Special Operations Wing. Japanese Vice Defense Minister Hiroyuki Miyazawa praised the pilot’s efforts, stating they had done everything possible until the last minute.

The loss of Jacob Galliher has deeply affected his community and a grateful nation. The Pittsfield community and families of the other crew members still missing are mourning alongside Galliher’s family during this difficult time.
