Two Nevada State Police Troopers, Sergeant Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix, Killed in Hit-and-Run on Las Vegas Freeway

Two police troopers in Nevada have tragically lost their lives after being run over in a hit-and-run incident on a Las Vegas freeway. The incident occurred on Thursday when the troopers stopped to check on a motorist who appeared to be sleeping in their vehicle on Interstate 15. According to a news release by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, a white Chevrolet station wagon collided with the troopers shortly after they stopped.

One of the troopers died at the scene, while the other was transported to the UMC Trauma Center but later passed away. The identities of the troopers, Sergeant Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix, were released by Nevada officials on Thursday evening. Abbate had been with the department since December 2013 and was recently promoted, while Felix joined in 2019 after serving in the U.S. Air Force.

The Nevada State Police expressed their condolences to the families and friends of the troopers, stating that both individuals had dedicated their careers to serving the state with exceptional commitment and pride. As investigations into the incident continue, more information is expected to be made available.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo released a statement expressing his profound sadness at the troopers’ deaths, calling it a devastating loss for law enforcement in Nevada. He praised the bravery, courage, and sacrifice of the troopers, vowing that their memory would never be forgotten.

The suspect in the hit-and-run, identified as Jemarcus Williams, fled the scene after the incident. However, responding officials later located the suspect’s vehicle unoccupied near an apartment complex. Williams was subsequently arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center, facing charges including reckless driving resulting in death, driving under the influence resulting in death, and leaving the scene of an accident.

The investigation into the incident is being led by the Las Vegas police department’s homicide section. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the LVMPD Homicide Section or provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
