Tragic Fire Claims Lives of Two Minors in Rumuruti, Laikipia County

Police are currently investigating a fire incident in Rumuruti, Laikipia County, which tragically resulted in the death of two young children. The incident occurred in the Mutanga area of Muhotetu location. According to the police, a two-roomed timber house caught fire, claiming the lives of a three-year-old boy and his one-year-old sister. Locals had reported hearing a loud explosion before the fire erupted, and it was later discovered that a gas cylinder was the cause of the blast.

Authorities are treating this incident as a priority and have launched an investigation into the tragedy, which took place on Wednesday afternoon. The frequency of gas cylinder explosions has been on the rise, prompting calls for increased safety measures. Just last month, an explosion in Eastleigh, Nairobi, claimed the life of one person. Similarly, this month, four workers were injured in South B shopping centre due to a gas cylinder explosion. Multiple government agencies are currently looking into these incidents.

Most of these explosions occur in residential areas, prompting concerns about the safety of households. The scene of the fire incident in Rumuruti has been processed, and the bodies of the deceased children have been moved to Nyahururu Hospital mortuary, where autopsies will be conducted.

In a separate incident, police are also investigating the suspected drowning of a man in Wajir. The man, identified as Yusuf Abdi Mohammed, was found dead in a quarry filled with rainwater in Khorof Harar. Children from Bura Daw Yare, who were grazing animals in the area, discovered his lifeless body. The police, with the assistance of the public, removed the body and it was transferred to Khorof Harar Sub County Hospital mortuary for further examination. Following Islamic rituals, the body was later handed over to the family for burial.

The recent heavy rains in the country have resulted in numerous fatalities, with over 136 deaths reported thus far. Additionally, 92,432 households, comprising approximately 462,160 individuals, have been displaced due to the floods. The National Disaster Operations Centre has provided contact numbers for reporting any emergency incidents. Despite an anticipated decrease in rainfall, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has assured the public that flood mitigation efforts continue to be intensified.
