Michael Latt, a well-known social justice advocate and studio consultant, was tragically shot and killed earlier this week in his Mid-Wilshire home. The suspect, Jemeelah Michl, allegedly entered Latt’s residence and opened fire with a semi-automatic handgun. The Los Angeles District Attorney, George Gascón, revealed that an unidentified accomplice was also present during the incident.

Latt, 33 years old, was the CEO and founder of Lead With Love, an organization dedicated to supporting influential women and artists of color. He was also a respected communications and marketing advisor, working with major companies and figures in the entertainment industry such as Netflix, Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY, Warner Bros Pictures, Common, and Annapurna Pictures.

According to Gascón, Michl specifically targeted Latt due to his connection with a woman she had been stalking. The woman was later identified as film director A.V. Rockwell, who had previously sought a restraining order against Michl. Court documents revealed that Michl had been hired as a background actor in Rockwell’s film “A Thousand and One” and had subsequently attempted to befriend the director. Despite Rockwell’s clear discomfort, Michl persisted, sending her letters and unsolicited gifts.

In one disturbing note, Michl hinted at suicide, stating, “My Glock is loaded as I write this… One pull of the trigger and I’ll be free.” Rockwell described Michl’s behavior as emotionally blackmailing, threatening to ruin her career and the success of the film if she did not comply.

Following the shooting, Michl remained at the scene and was promptly arrested by responding officers. At the time of the attack, she was living in her car. Her next court appearance is scheduled for December 15.

The tragic death of Michael Latt has shocked and saddened the community, highlighting the dangers of stalking and the urgent need for increased awareness and prevention. Latt’s contributions to the entertainment industry and his advocacy for social justice will be remembered and celebrated by those who knew him.
