LAS VEGAS (KOLO/AP) – The suspected hit-and-run driver responsible for the tragic demise of two Nevada State Police troopers in Las Vegas has been identified as Jemarcus Rojee Williams, aged 46.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the troopers were rendering assistance to a motorist who appeared to be asleep on the side of Interstate 15 at approximately 3:23 a.m. when a white Chevrolet HHR collided with them.

Tragically, one trooper perished at the scene while the other succumbed to their injuries at a hospital.

Following an intense search, the police located the vehicle at around 8 a.m. in an apartment complex near J Street and Monroe Avenue, leading to the subsequent arrest of Williams.

Williams has been charged with multiple felonies, including reckless driving causing death, driving under the influence causing death, and leaving the scene of an accident causing death.

During a press conference, Las Vegas police Undersheriff Andrew Walsh confirmed that a suspect had been apprehended several hours after the collision and expressed the importance of the community’s support during this devastating time for the Nevada state police.

While the troopers’ names have not been disclosed, Deputy Police Chief Branden Clarkson described them as married individuals with children.

Footage released by the police department depicted the bodies of both troopers being escorted to the Clark County coroner’s office by a convoy of approximately two dozen motorcycle officers, their blue-and-red police lights flashing.

Outside the coroner’s office, numerous law enforcement officers joined the procession and saluted as the bodies, draped in American flags, were carried inside by uniformed state troopers.

The coroner’s office is currently conducting an investigation and has yet to release the troopers’ identities.

Governor Joe Lombardo expressed profound sadness over the loss and ordered that all U.S. flags in Nevada be flown at half-staff until the troopers’ funerals, acknowledging their bravery, courage, and sacrifice.

The tragic incident resulted in the closure of a section of the highway and several on-ramps for several hours, causing significant traffic congestion.

This unfortunate event occurred not far from the location where another state trooper was fatally hit on Interstate 15 earlier this year while pursuing a stolen vehicle. The suspect involved in the carjacking incident, who led officers on a chase throughout Las Vegas and neighboring North Las Vegas, struck trooper Micah May as he was deploying a tire-deflating device across the freeway lanes.
