Harold “James” Crawford: Victim of a 29-Year-Old Murder in Sedgwick County, Kansas

Law enforcement authorities in Sedgwick County are seeking the public’s assistance in solving a 29-year-old murder case. On October 29, 1994, workers from the Kansas Gas and Electric Company made a grim discovery while cleaning the ditches and tree rows in the 5600 block of West 47th Street South. They stumbled upon human remains buried in a shallow grave.

Following an examination by the Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office and a Forensic Anthropologist, it was determined that the victim had been the victim of a homicide. However, the identity of the victim remained a mystery, hindering the investigation for nearly three decades.

In late 2022, Sgt. Michael Guthrie of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office applied for and received a grant from Othram Inc. to conduct DNA testing on the victim. In May 2023, the testing finally yielded results. Using advanced DNA technology, Othram was able to identify a relative of the victim, leading to the identification of Harold “James” Crawford.

Crawford, born on January 11th, 1973, was just 21 years old at the time of his death. He resided in an apartment complex on the east side of Wichita. The discovery of his identity has provided a breakthrough in the case.

Law enforcement officials are now urging anyone with information about Crawford or the circumstances surrounding his murder to come forward. Even seemingly insignificant details may prove crucial to the investigation.
