PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The United States Air Force member who tragically lost his life in an Osprey crash off the coast of Japan earlier this week has been identified as Jacob “Jake” Galliher, a father of two from Massachusetts. The Pittsfield Police Department announced on Friday that Galliher, a 2017 graduate of Taconic Vocational High School in Pittsfield, was one of eight crew members on board the Osprey V-22 aircraft that crashed on Wednesday off Yakushima, an island south of Kagoshima on the southern main island of Kyushu.

According to the department’s Facebook post, Galliher had served his country proudly and leaves behind his wife Ivy, as well as two sons aged 2 and 6 weeks old. His body has been identified as the only crew member found so far, while the search for the remaining seven crew members continues.

The Osprey, which is a hybrid aircraft capable of taking off and landing like a helicopter, was engaged in a training mission at the time of the crash. It has the ability to rotate its propellers forward and cruise at high speeds like an airplane during flight.

The wreckage of the aircraft was discovered by a fishing boat near the crash site off Yakushima, as reported by the Japanese Coast Guard. However, Galliher’s fellow crew members are still missing.

Ospreys have been involved in several accidents in the past, and in response to this recent crash, Japan suspended flights by its Osprey aircraft on Thursday. However, the Pentagon confirmed that U.S. Ospreys are still operating out of Japan.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation, and more information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
