Surveillance footage captured the defendants getting in and out of the black Infiniti that Li had been driving. They proceeded to assault Li in the back seat, and then drove him through various boroughs of New York City, Westchester County, and eventually to New Hampshire, where they buried his body in a forest.

An indictment filed on November 21 revealed that Li was held for ransom prior to his death, although it did not specify the amount demanded or from whom. Li’s naked body was eventually discovered in a shallow grave in the White Mountains, showing signs of a skull fracture and other injuries.

One of the defendants, Donxing Zheng, was arrested on July 31 and is currently in custody without bail. Four additional defendants were arrested on Wednesday, identified as Wangchao He, Jiangnan Lin, Dong Liu, and Sui Zhang, all from Queens. They have pleaded not guilty and are also being held without bail.

The defendants face a federal charge of kidnapping resulting in death, which carries a maximum penalty of death or life in prison. It is yet to be revealed if federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty.
