Disappointment Over Absence of Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony
The news that there will be no Welcome to Country and Smoking ceremony for our graduating exhibition has left me feeling really sad. However, I completely respect the decision made by the Blak leaders following the recent referendum.
As a member of the community, I understand the importance of these cultural ceremonies in acknowledging and honoring the traditional custodians of the land. It is a way of recognizing their ongoing connection to the land and their contributions to our society.

The absence of these ceremonies can be seen as a lack of respect for the Indigenous culture and the Blak leaders who have fought tirelessly for their rights. It is disheartening to think that their efforts are not being acknowledged and celebrated in this significant event.
The Welcome to Country ceremony is a customary practice where the traditional owners of the land formally welcome visitors and grant them permission to enter their territory. It is a way of showing respect and creating a sense of unity and inclusion.
The Smoking ceremony, on the other hand, is a sacred ritual where native plants are burned to cleanse the space and ward off negative energy. It is a powerful symbol of spiritual cleansing and purification.
These ceremonies not only provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture but also serve as a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by First Nations people in their fight for recognition, equality, and justice.

As we move forward, let us continue to educate ourselves about Indigenous culture, support and amplify the voices of Blak leaders, and work towards a more inclusive and respectful society.
