Airman from Massachusetts Identified as Victim in US Military Osprey Aircraft Crash off Coast of Japan

PITTSFIELD, MASS. (WHDH) – The body of a military service member has been discovered following the crash of a US military Osprey aircraft off the coast of Japan, and has been identified as a soldier from Massachusetts.

The airman, Staff Sgt. Jacob Galliher, who hailed from Pittsfield, was identified by authorities several days after the CV-22B Osprey he was aboard crashed near Yakushima Island on Wednesday, Nov. 29. Galliher was one of eight crew members on board the aircraft, and he is the only individual to have been recovered and identified thus far.

The Pittsfield Police Department expressed their condolences on Facebook, describing Galliher as a devoted patriot who proudly served his country. He leaves behind a wife and two young boys, aged 2 and 6-weeks-old.

“To Jacob’s family, friends, our community is mourning with you, and also the families of the other 7 who have yet to be located,” the police department stated.
