Two men in Hampton, Virginia, were both victims of a carjacking by the same suspect on Saturday morning. The first incident occurred outside Los Compadres Restaurant on Commander Shepard Blvd, where a local DJ was approached by a man who held a gun to his neck. The DJ, who chose to remain anonymous, had his belongings stolen and was forced out of his car at gunpoint. He managed to escape and alert authorities, but the suspect fled with the stolen vehicle. The car was later found with a damaged tire.
In a separate incident 90 minutes later, David Murphy, a Lyft driver, was targeted by the same suspect at Hampton Woods Apartments on Marcella Road. Murphy had a bad feeling about the situation and offered to dial a number for the suspect instead of handing over his phone. The suspect then pulled a gun on Murphy and demanded he exit the vehicle. In defense, Murphy reached for his personal firearm and fired at the suspect. There was a struggle, and the suspect’s gun malfunctioned. Eventually, the suspect and an accomplice took Murphy’s car and fled the scene. The vehicle was later discovered with significant damage.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Kenneth Maddox Jr., has been charged with two counts of carjacking and two counts of using a firearm in a felony. Maddox was apprehended after seeking medical attention for a gunshot wound sustained during the second carjacking. Police were able to match his clothing with surveillance footage from the incidents. As of now, Maddox remains hospitalized.
The DJ and Murphy both expressed their concern for their families and the emotional toll the incidents have taken. Murphy, who relied on his vehicle for income, has set up a GoFundMe page to assist with the financial burden caused by the loss of his car.
These carjackings serve as a reminder of the potential dangers individuals face in their everyday lives. Hampton police continue to investigate the incidents and urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
