By | November 30, 2023

Five people have died in Gujarat’s Kheda district after consuming an ayurvedic syrup, according to local police. The syrup, known as ‘Kalmeghasav – Asava Arishta,’ was sold by a grocery shopkeeper who has since been arrested. The shopkeeper distributed the syrup to around 50 individuals before the deaths occurred.

The superintendent of police, Rajesh Gadhiya, stated that the syrup had a permissible alcohol content of 12%. He also mentioned that while a license is required for the production of ayurvedic products, it is not mandatory for their sale.

One of the victims, who lived seven kilometers from Bilodara village, passed away under suspicious circumstances on November 28. The police are investigating whether the death is directly linked to the consumption of the syrup, especially considering the individual’s pre-existing battle with cancer. The shopkeeper claims to have exclusively sold the syrup to villagers and not to outsiders.

Furthermore, the shopkeeper’s father, who also consumed the syrup, has been admitted to the hospital for treatment. The police are closely monitoring his condition.

In addition to these deaths, another mysterious death occurred in Vadadala village of Mahemadabad taluka. The police are investigating whether there is any connection between this death and the incidents in Kheda district.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety and regulation of ayurvedic products. While ayurvedic medicines are popular in India, there have been cases in the past where such products were found to contain harmful substances or were not properly regulated. Authorities need to ensure that strict measures are in place to prevent such incidents and protect public health.
