A young man has been sentenced to six years in prison for assaulting a security officer inside a bar’s toilets and attacking another guard on a street in Paceville. The incident occurred four years ago when Twain Sciberras, then 19 years old, went bowling with his uncle and ended the night at Bacco Bar.

Trouble started when Sciberras’ uncle, known as “Temi from Marsa,” became impatient with the bartender and began shouting and swearing. A bouncer intervened to calm the situation, but Sciberras joined in, using foul language and making menacing threats. The bouncer claimed that the duo even threatened to harm him if he called for help.

In an attempt to defuse the situation, the bouncer invited Sciberras and his uncle to the bar toilets for a discussion. However, things quickly turned violent. Sciberras allegedly attacked the bouncer, hitting him repeatedly with a knuckleduster and causing severe injuries. The victim required 18 stitches for a split lip and suffered injuries above his left eye, resulting in permanent damage.

Later that evening, a security guard at the nearby Eden Cinemas witnessed Sciberras fighting with another man. When the guard commented on their behavior, Sciberras and his companion turned on him, assaulting him and causing facial injuries that required suturing. The victim also suffered a fracture above his eye and experienced eyesight problems.

Sciberras pleaded not guilty, claiming that he was defending himself and denying the use of a knuckleduster. His uncle supported his version of events, stating that they had been attacked first. However, CCTV footage from the bar contradicted their claims.

The court found Sciberras’s actions to be “shocking” and unwarranted. The magistrate noted the clear visibility of the knuckleduster during the assault on the bouncer. Although evidence for the second attack was not as strong, the court still found Sciberras guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Despite Sciberras having no prior significant criminal record and showing signs of maturity since the incident, the severity of the charges meant that a suspended sentence or probation was not possible. Therefore, the court sentenced him to six years in prison, minus time spent in custody. A three-year restraining order was also issued, and Sciberras was ordered to pay court expert expenses.

Inspector Leeroy Balzan Engerer prosecuted the case, while lawyers Joe Giglio and Roberto Montalto represented the victims.
