James Hutchinson Dies After Being Arrested by Denver Police

A man in Denver has died after being arrested by police officers. The incident occurred on the morning of November 15 at an apartment building near 14th Avenue and Speer Boulevard. According to the Denver Police Department, the man had previously run away from paramedics after getting out of an ambulance.

In a news conference held by the police, updates were provided on this case as well as a separate shooting incident at Commons Park on November 20. The man who died in police custody had initially called emergency services claiming he was having a heart attack before hanging up. Firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to the scene, but the man was uncooperative and fled the ambulance.

Shortly after, a security officer at a nearby King Soopers reported that the man was claiming someone was trying to chase or rob him. Paramedics once again arrived and attempted to assist the man, but he escaped from the ambulance and threw a rock at a building’s glass door, prompting firefighters to call the police.

When an officer arrived at the scene, the man ran away, and the officer did not give chase. However, a security officer at an apartment complex later reported that the man had broken a ground-floor window and was attempting to enter the building. Two security guards confronted him, and a physical altercation ensued, during which the man punched and bit one of the guards.

Police officers arrived and handcuffed the man, but they noticed he was having difficulty breathing and seemed unresponsive. They requested paramedics to return to the scene and began performing CPR. Unfortunately, their efforts were unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead at the hospital on November 16. The cause of his death is currently under investigation by the coroner’s office.

The Denver Police Department has initiated a critical incident investigation protocol, involving multiple agencies, due to the nature of the officers’ interaction with the individual and his subsequent cardiac arrest. Further details regarding this case are yet to be released.
