The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Abiodun Alamutu, has revealed that the suspects behind the murder of the Director of Finance in Governor Dapo Abiodun’s office, Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi, are believed to be insiders. Oyekanmi was shot dead on Wednesday while returning from the bank where he had withdrawn funds for the state. The robbery and murder were premeditated, as the armed robbers were armed with a sledgehammer to break into the bullion van. The gunmen seemed to have prior knowledge that Oyekanmi was heading to the bank to make withdrawals, suggesting an inside source. The police have launched an investigation and are determined to apprehend the culprits.

Oyekanmi had visited a branch of Fidelity Bank and Sterling Bank to withdraw a total of N112.335 million. On the Kuto flyover, the robbers intercepted the bullion van and used a sledgehammer to break into it. Oyekanmi was shot dead with an AK-47 rifle, while the other occupants of the van, the driver and another man, were unharmed. It was revealed that the bullion van was without any police escort at the time of the incident.

Meanwhile, there has been criticism surrounding the circumstances of Oyekanmi’s death. Femi Aina, a legal practitioner and Senatorial candidate, stated that the state government should have ensured Oyekanmi had a police escort, and called for the reconsideration of the Commissioner for Finance’s position. The National Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Olaposi Oginni, expressed concern over the security situation in Ogun State and called for a change in the leadership of the state’s security agencies.

As of now, there have been no updates from the state police command regarding the investigation. The incident has raised questions about the security protocols in place and the need for stronger measures to protect individuals carrying large sums of money. The family of Oyekanmi is urged to seek legal advice, as employers have a duty to ensure the safety of their employees. The tragic death of Oyekanmi serves as a reminder of the importance of adequate security measures and risk management.
