Body of Woman Found in Bag on Roadside in Northern Suburbs Identified

The body of a woman that was discovered in a bag on the side of a road in Old Mill Creek, Illinois, has been identified as Megan Lewis, a 39-year-old woman from Chicago, according to the Lake County Coroner. Lewis’ cause of death has been determined to be strangulation.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the homicide and is seeking any information that could help shed light on the disturbing discovery. Authorities are combing through missing persons reports, starting with those in Lake County, and will expand their search to surrounding counties and states if necessary.

The body was found early in the morning by Janet Whitmore, who was on her way to work. She initially thought the object on the side of the road was either garbage or a dead deer, but it wasn’t until daylight that multiple drivers called 911 to report the body.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli stated that the investigation is focused on identifying the victim, determining her background and activities, and ultimately finding the person responsible for her death.

The woman’s body was partially covered by a garbage bag when it was discovered, and there was visible trauma to her face, according to Covelli. An autopsy confirmed that her death was a homicide, but specific details about the cause of death have not been released.

Authorities are now trying to locate the victim’s family and are asking for the public’s help in providing any surveillance footage or information that could aid in the investigation. License plate readers in the area are also being utilized to generate leads.

The exact time when the body was left on the roadside remains unclear, but based on Whitmore’s account, it would have been before 3 a.m. The hope is that surveillance footage from that time period will help identify any suspicious activity in the area.
