Highland Park, IL – It has been nearly six months since Maureen “Moe” Wener, a beloved local school board member and Democratic Party activist, was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver while riding her bike in Highland Park. Despite the passage of time, prosecutors have yet to file charges in the case, leaving Wener’s family frustrated and seeking answers.
Wener, 49, was riding her bike at the corner of Deerfield and Piccadilly roads on the afternoon of June 2 when she was struck. Bystanders rushed to her aid, but she was pronounced dead at Condell Medical Center. The driver responsible for the accident fled the scene, leaving Wener’s family devastated and searching for justice.

Paul Rundell, Wener’s widower, expressed his frustration, saying, “My son and I deserve answers. Our whole family deserves answers. It’s time for charges to be brought without further delay.”
Police reports reveal that a woman named Melanie Hass, a 47-year-old resident of Saint Charles, showed up at the Highland Park Police Department hours after the crash. Initially cooperative, Hass hired a lawyer and declined further comment. She is now the defendant in a wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of Wener’s estate.
In early September, the case was turned over to the felony review unit of the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart stated that his office is awaiting expert analysis of digital forensic evidence before making a charging decision. He assured that the investigation is ongoing and declined to comment further.
Evidence extracted from the infotainment system of Hass’s 2020 Jeep Wrangler shows that her vehicle was at the location and time of the accident. In her account to the police, Hass claimed that she went over the curb while struggling with her vehicle’s manual transmission. However, the data from her car suggests otherwise.

Wener was an active member of the community, serving on the Deerfield School District 109 board and working for state lawmakers. She was described as a passionate advocate for schools and a beloved mother. Her tragic death has left a void in the community and her family continues to seek justice.
