By | November 29, 2023

In May 2016, the car of Maria Chindamo was found just outside the gates of the fields she owned in the Mancuso stronghold of Limbadi, Italy. Chindamo had hoped to build a small farm business on the land. The motor was running, the driver’s side door was open, and hair and blood were discovered on the tarmac beside the car. However, there was no trace of Chindamo.

Her disappearance came exactly a year after her husband had taken his own life, leading some to believe that it was a revenge killing by his family who held her responsible for his death. However, it was later revealed that Chindamo was murdered because she refused to sell her land to a neighbor with mafia links.

The details of Chindamo’s murder were revealed during Italy’s biggest mafia trial in 30 years. The trial involved 337 defendants, with 207 found guilty, and a total of 2,200 years in prison sentences handed out. The trial took place in a converted call center due to the large number of participants.

The trial focused on the ‘Ndrangheta, the Calabrian Mafia, which is now among the most powerful organized crime syndicates in the world. The crimes revealed during the trial included murders, usury, extortion rackets, vote-rigging, drugs, and insurance scams.

The ‘Ndrangheta’s influence reached into almost every aspect of Calabrian life, with criminal cartels controlling access to jobs, even in the public sector. Funeral parlors were also controlled by different mafia families, who overcharged grieving families for their services.

The trial also exposed the ‘Ndrangheta’s control over construction, with building firms forced to use a company owned by the mafia for any construction projects.
