Suspect in Plantation Motor Inn Homicide Commits Suicide During Apprehension Attempt

A man suspected of being involved in the homicide of a woman at Plantation Motor Inn has reportedly taken his own life as law enforcement officers tried to apprehend him, according to authorities.

On November 24, Lafayette Police Officers responded to a call at the 2800 block of the Northeast Evangeline Thruway. Upon arrival, officers discovered a female victim with gunshot wounds. Sadly, the woman, identified as Nancy Herrick, aged 39 and from St. Martinville, succumbed to her injuries.

The Lafayette Police Department (LPD) conducted an investigation and identified Clifton Washington, a 34-year-old resident of Lafayette, as the suspect in the shooting. The LPD’s Investigative Unit obtained an arrest warrant for Washington on a charge of second-degree murder.

On November 28, at around 8:44 a.m., Lafayette Police, in collaboration with the U.S. Marshals Violent Fugitive Task Force, located Washington at the Super 7 Inn and Suites on NW Evangeline Thruway.

Law enforcement officers attempted to apprehend Washington, but he barricaded himself inside one of the rooms at the Super 7. In response, the Lafayette Police Department’s SWAT team was called to the scene.

During negotiations, Washington made the decision to take his own life by shooting himself, according to a press release. Investigators are currently present at the scene to further examine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

The shooting at Plantation Motor Inn and subsequent events have shocked the local community. Authorities are working diligently to gather all the necessary details and understand what led to this devastating crime.

The LPD has expressed its condolences to the family and friends of Nancy Herrick and assured the public that they will continue their efforts to maintain the safety and security of the community.
