Tucker, a 7-year-old American Yellow Labrador Retriever, is finally feeling better after battling a mysterious canine virus. His owner, Amanda House of Royal Oak, Michigan, initially thought Tucker had kennel cough, a common respiratory illness. However, the cough persisted for over a month, and House became increasingly worried about her beloved pet’s health.
House’s concerns were validated when she learned that a canine virus had spread to 14 states, resulting in the death of at least one dog. While Michigan has not been confirmed as a hot spot for the illness, House and her veterinarian believe that Tucker’s case is the first in the state. The illness was first detected in Oregon, where five dogs were hospitalized for pneumonia symptoms, and one sadly passed away.

Veterinarians and animal care providers in Michigan are now on high alert for the illness, which does not respond to antibiotics. They are urging pet owners to be vigilant and seek immediate veterinary care if their dogs show any symptoms. Early detection is crucial in treating the virus effectively.
Tucker had three vet visits for his illness, starting with a diagnosis of kennel cough. When the treatment failed, further tests revealed that Tucker was likely suffering from the mysterious virus. He was then prescribed a cough suppressant and later put on a steroid. Since starting the steroid treatment, Tucker has stopped coughing.
According to Dr. Marcy McKeithen, a practicing veterinarian with over 25 years of experience, the medical community is still learning about the virus. It is unclear whether it is bacterial or viral, and no vaccine has been developed yet.
To prevent the spread of the illness, pet owners are advised to keep their dogs away from other animals and avoid places like dog parks, pet day-care centers, and grooming facilities. Establishing a relationship with a veterinarian, getting pets insured, and maintaining their overall health through regular check-ups, vaccinations, and a balanced diet are also recommended.
